How To Make Chocolate Mousse

Making chocolate mousse may sound like a complicated task, but is actually very easy, can definitely be done at home and only requires two basic ingredients: plain chocolate of course, and egg.

Here is a simple chocolate mousse method:

Break roughly 2 ounces of plain chocolate into small pieces. Now you will need to bring a little water to the boil, in a saucepan or pot. Rest a glass or ceramic bowl just above the boiling water, NOT TOUCHING the water. Place your chocolate pieces in the bowl and very gently stir until the chocolate has melted and become smooth. Remember, you are using the steam from the boiling water to heat the bowl and melt your chocolate, so by all means: don’t let the bowl get too hot, because it will cook and ruin the chocolate – what a waste!

Ok, next is the eggs. Take two eggs, separate the whites from the yolks. Now, once you’ve finished melting the chocolate and removed it from the heat, beat the two egg yolks into it. The whites must be whisked thoroughly until very stiff (Like in making meringue, if you hold the bowl upside down, then the egg whites must not fall out).

Very carefully fold your stiff egg white into your melted chocolate mixture, using a plastic spatula or a normal table spoon. This helps retain the lightness of the mixture. If you are too rough or vigorous with the folding, the resulting chocolate mousse mixture will end up being flat and heavy, instead of light, fluffy and aerated like you want it to be.

Now you have successfully finished making your own chocolate mouse mixture, well done! The next step is to spoon it into the dishes you will serve it in. It’s going to set, so if you let it do so in the mixing bowl, then its shape will be destroyed when you later transfer it into smaller dishes.

The amount of chocolate mousse mixture you’ve made will make two nice and generous portions, or you can stretch it out across three (less delighted) people. Setting takes between one and two hours in the refrigerator.

Your chocolate mousse will be even more gorgeous if served with fruit, such as strawberries thin apple slices, orange slices, or pineapple slices. Whipped cream always makes a delightfully rich accompaniment, and even more so if followed by grated chocolate, walnuts or almonds.
